wouldn't matter if they claimed their spot now.. they'll get kicked after 24 hours of inactivity, and won't be playing the endgame if they are afk.

You do realize that many people use the -email, -password, and -character option to automate the login process and THEREFORE, never see the logon screen or the messages GW puts on the login screen.
It just flys right by to the char selection screen.
Just a FYI in case you don't know.

All this makes me wish to re-request the introduction of auto-kick for 30-60 min afk. Seriously... **** yo couch! Anet needs players in their districts and not bandwidth hogs running up their server bill. Maybe they should start chargin?

I noticed this too, went on Christmas day and was wondering why so many people were standing around on the circles. For a second, I thought I had the dates confused and I had it wrong, before realising that everyone is just stupid.
Yes, as soon as the decorations appear you'll see one or two people randomly standing around on the rings, but that's clearly not what was going on here. Even on the 23rd and 24th there was practically no one on them, but on the 25th, they were completely packed, and many of the people on them were asking when the event started. And today it's mostly died down..
So it's very obviously simply a case of peple not being able to read.

So what's the deal?
Have a Merry Christmas/Wintersday too, everyone.

It's just an unfortunate example of players making bad assumptions. I remember the first Wintersday when Lions Arch was mobbed on christmas day because people thought there was going to be an event like there was on Halloween. They were cheering for santa...oh how wrong they were.

1. "Definitely", not "definately".
2. "People's", not "peoples".
3. Contractions are signified by the use of apostrophes, not commas.
4. "English" should be capitalized.

I recall reading somewhere that the 24 hour auto-disconnect feature is disabled during holiday events. I can't remember where I saw it though. It had something to do with this very reason - that people may want to afk and have their character present during the finale when they are going to be away. Of course nothing can stop service interruptions that may occur.

Going away from keyboard for more than 1 hour is pretty stupid. Imagine the amount of electricity you could be saving by not leaving your computer on for hours while you are away. I know that the computer doesn't use much electricity idling. But, that's idling for 1 day. Imagine now that you go away from keyboard for every day for 1 hour for the entire year. The money will stack up and you could have use that money to buy a new GPU or a new hard drive.
